Boards are, of course, many things. From large, listed corporates to smaller, owner-managed companies and basically, the work and responsibility of the Board are the same.

But, of course there's a difference. The backbone of many countries industrial structure is owner-managed small and medium-sized enterprises. This is also the case in Denmark where SME's make up almost half of all joint stock companies and about 70% of all limited liability companies. The many owner-managed companies typically benefit greatly from the business coaching, knowledge and insight of a professional Board of Directors. The Board is a key partner for growth, for staying focused and in keeping direction. In addition, a professional Board can help open doors to new partners, customers or others, just as banks tend to look with quite different eyes at companies with strong Boards.

It's obvious that finding the right people for the Board is essential. Similarly, the choice of Chairman is important and in the case of an owner-managed company, various circumstances must be taken into consideration. And value-adding board work must be carried out through a strong and constructive cooperation which needs to be developed. Individually and jointly.
